Sixth Annual Grunig Lecture: “Ethics as Culture”

The Sixth Annual Grunig Lecture, “Ethics as Culture,” will be presented by FleishmanHillard President and CEO Dave Senay on Wed., Oct. 30, at the University of Maryland.
This is the Institute for Public Relations’ premier event for professionals in the Washington, D.C. area. Co-hosted by the University of Maryland and the Council of Public Relations Firms, the lecture series honors the university’s James E. Grunig, Professor Emeritus, and Larissa A. Grunig, Professor Emerita.
Senay has worked across multiple communication practices throughout several regions of the world during his 30 years of PR work. He joined FleishmanHillard in 1984 as an account executive and has since taken on increasing responsibilities, becoming president and CEO of the firm in July 2006. He has participated in and/or led award-winning global account teams for telecommunications, biotechnology, and information to food, healthcare and automotive. Dave is the current Chair of the Council of Public Relations Firms. He was inducted into the PR News Hall of Fame in 2011.
Leading up to the lecture at 5:30 p.m. will be a series of more than 12 roundtable discussions. Topics range from missteps and recovery in the age of social media to agency vs. corporate PR – examining cultures, job roles, career paths.

Jack Martin of Hill + Knowlton Strategies delivered the fifth annual Grunig Lecture, “Democratization of Data: From Research to Insights to Effective Communication.” The 2012 Grunig Lecture was held on October 23, 2012 at The University of Maryland.
Jack is global executive chairman and chief executive officer of Hill + Knowlton Strategies. Prior to leading the global firm, Jack was founding chairman of Public Strategies, Inc., which was acquired by WPP of London in 2006 and merged with Hill + Knowlton in 2010.

I delivered the Grunig Lecture at the University of Maryland today to a group of students and their professors. My topic was the evolution of public relations into public engagement. I asserted that PR can become the discipline that melds strategy and communications, constituting an essential bridge between corporations and their stakeholders.
